Achor Center Literacy Project ATLANTA CHAPTER COMMUNITY SERVICE SIGNATURE PROJECT The Achor Center for Homeless Women and Children The Achor Center was established in 1988 to provide a place that homeless woman and children could call home. A place where they can go to regain their self-esteem and self-sufficiency and begin to build a future for themselves and their children. Over 1,800 women and children have entered the Achor program and more than 70% have made a successful transition to independent living. A great deal of the program?s success can be attributed to the individualized, goal-oriented planning approach which entails a totally integrated residential program of counseling, job skills training, licensed day-care, job placement help, housing placement and more. This rigorous program requires a deep commitment from those who enter the Achor program. The selection process involves straightforward criteria. In order to be a part of the Achor program, individuals must be willing and able to work toward self-sufficiency and must b currently free from chemical dependence. Once approved, Achor residents move into the Center, create a plan of action and perform daily tasks and responsibilities. They have a 30-day probationary period in which to find a job or enter training. After one month, a vocational plan for education and employment is put in place. After a one-year program, participants work at permanent jobs, live in affordable housing and lead productive lives. |
